Everyone Needs A Break Sometimes
Updates on where the Stan! and the show have been ... and what's coming up next.
As you may have noticed, after completing the show’s original mission to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons and the entire hobby of Tabletop Roleplaying Games with weekly interviews and cartoon homages—plus an additional two months of shows broadening the scope to the whole of the hobby—he show has been on hiatus since mid-May. This came about suddenly, and was a combination of a heavy work schedule and an unexpected bit of creative exhaustion. I still had passion for the show … but I needed a little break to recharge my batteries.
All that is fair and reasonable enough … I’m just a little disappointed with myself for not having come here to ANNOUNCE it sooner. The truth of the matter is, though, that I didn’t know WHAT to announce. Although I knew that the break was only going to be temporary, I didn’t know exactly how long it would be, or what exactly it would look like when the creative tap got turned back on.
So yeah … my apologies to all the fine followers here (particularly to those who have been generous enough to become paid subscribers) for not keeping you better informed.
But here we are now. I’ve got a good idea of what’s coming down the pipeline for the next few weeks. And although surprises often happen in the summer months, I feel confident in saying that I’ll be back streaming SOMETHING on a weekly basis, beginning this week.
There are currently a dozen or more cartoon homages that got started on episodes this year, but that I didn’t have time to complete. In order to get them done in the most timely manner possible, beginning this week I’m going to start by taking the Wednesday timeslot to live stream a series of Work In Progress drawing sessions. I’ll leave the live chat room open while I work and use it for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) style interaction with anyone who cares to show up. (And subscribers to this newsletter are invited to submit questions ahead of time.)
Join me this Wednesday, June 11th, at 6pm Pacific as I work on the cartoon homage to Magali Villeneuve's cover for Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, begun during Episode 52.
And expect regular updates start coming from this newsletter again, beginning … well … now.
Thanks, everyone. I’ve really enjoyed what we all accomplished together in the first fifteen months … and I’m really looking forward to what we’re going to produce going forward. And you reading this are DEFINITELY part of the team!
If you’re enjoying the show, please consider sharing it with other folks you think would like it, too. Word of mouth is the BEST way to help the show grow.
And please do consider upgrading your subscription. You’ll get access to process videos for all of the art produced on the show and discounts on all art prints and other show-related merch.
A question that you may be able to answer that doesn't apply to any *one* of the creators you've interviewed, but some of them, and I think you were there when it happened, so you might have some insights. I've only heard hints of, but not the full story, of how TSR was selling off some of the properties they owned to the creators as they were shutting them down. And that's how James Ward was able to get Metamorphosis Alpha, and Ars Magica went to John Nephew. I'd like to learn more.
