Homage: 1974
Here's the cartoon homage that was created on screen during Episode 2
Each week on 50 Years in the Dungeon, while Stan! is interviewing his guests, he also creates a cartoon homage to a classic piece of D&D art. In Episode 2, the focus was on the first year in the game’s history—1974—so he chose the cover image from the original D&D boxed set.
Although Stan! got a good deal of the way through the drawing during the show, the livestream only lasted about an hour … so he finished the drawing off screen. Here are the results:
After thinking about it for a while, Stan! wondered what it would be like if he’d done the cartoon in black & white—like the original. So he went back and replaced the color layers.
A fun experiment, but in the end we thought the color version was the one to go with. And so that’s what we’ll continue to do in future episodes, even if the source image is black & white.
