Homage: 1992

During my conversation with Lester Smith (in Episode 20), I was working on a cartoon homage to the 1992 Ravenloft boxed set, Forbidden Lore. The original cover painting is by the great Clyde Caldwell.
As I was doing the coloring on this piece (in particular, as I was fiddling with the lighting details) I realized that this is the second cartoon homage I’ve done whose focus is on something unexpected coming out of a spellbook. The first was the cover for 1985’s Unearthed Arcana, where a mage stares transfixed by the glow emanating from the tome in his lap.
In UA we never get to see what the glow represents—a wondrous new spell, a magical item tucked between the pages, or an explosive rune in the midst of activating. But here we definitely see what the magical radiance is all about, much to the dark-haired adventurer’s dismay.
