Homage: 1993
Exclusive for subscribers: Early access to the completed cartoon homage to the "Book of Artifacts" from Episode 21.
During Episode 21, as I was chatting with author and game designer Douglas Niles, I began work on a cartoon homage to the 1994 AD&D hardcover supplement Book of Artifacts, with cover art by Fred Fields.
If you missed the episode, you can watch the whole thing on Facebook. Doug doesn’t make a lot of convention or podcast appearances, so this is one of the few places where you can go to hear some of his stories from his time working on the original Dragonlance team, writing the very first Forgotten Realms novel, creating the Maztica campaign … and that’s just for starters!
I’ve always loved the fantasy trope of a mystical, disembodied hand holding appearing magically holding an item of great power. Fred Fields really captures the pure essence of that type of scene in his cover painting … and I had an absolute BLAST trying to do justice to it in my cartoony way.
As a subscriber to this newsletter, you’re seeing this art before it is released for general consumption. You also have the option to buy an art print of this or any of the cartoon homages (and if you’re a paid subscriber, you get a discount on those purchases).
Please share this newsletter with friends who are also fans of Dungeons & Dragons. The best promotion we can get is word of mouth … and your opinion matters! Drop us a line if you have any comments or suggestions for the newsletter or the livestream shows.
