Homage: 2007
Stan! has finished the drawing begun during Episode 37, and you get to see it first
As we move into the later stages of this project, it’s becoming more frequent that the I have no particular attachment to—or in some cases, even awareness of—the products whose art I am paying honor to. By 2007, I was no longer on staff at Wizards of the Coast. In fact, I wasn’t even doing any freelance for them because I was working on staff at Upper Deck Entertainment. And although I definitely WAS still playing D&D, I wasn’t by any means buying every product.
I became aware of The Sinister Spire when I took a contract assignment at Wizards in 2012 and someone left a copy on the Free Table. The cover immediately caught my eye—such a striking image (and another in the long line of illustrations showing Regdar coming out on the wrong end of a combat encounter). I flipped through the pages briefly, but I never read it thoroughly, so I really have no idea how good an adventure it is (however, with Bruce Cordell and Ari Marmell as authors, I can only guess that it’s pretty dang good).
Having said all that, I can tell you that I’ve never forgotten The Sinister Spire, and when I began this project this painting by Steve Prescott was one that I immediately began HOPING would make it onto my list to interpret. I’ve never played this adventure, but I can tell you that this is the type of book (or at least book cover) that makes people WANT to play D&D.
