I began drawing my interpretation of Magali Villeneuve’s cover to Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos while the book’s author, James Wyatt, was my guest on the show. This was on Episode 52, back at the end of January. And while I fiddled with it when I could, I only just finished it as part of last week’s “Work in Progress” show. But finish it, I have!
Strixhaven was the third official crossover product between D&D and Magic: the Gathering (all of which were written or co-written by James) and it’s the sort of thing that fits perfectly in both worlds … and yet still feels like a weird aside in both worlds, too. A magical academy, where adventurers more often dive into stacks of books than dank dungeons, and where treasure is usually measured in knowledge and lore rather than gold pieces and gems. It’s just the kind of setting I like best—a little odd, a little meta, but incredibly magical and fantastical!
Just look at the cover—two well-dressed young people laughing and joking around while poring over a stack of dusty tomes in a fancy, well appointed library. Oh, and don’t forget the wise, cute mentor figure watching over them knowingly. How could you NOT be inspired roleplay in a world like that?
