Process Video: 1995
As an exclusive perk for our paid subscribers, we present this video showing the step by step creation of Stan!'s cartoon homage to "Glantri."
In Episode 23, my guest was former TSR editor, designer, and author Anne K. Brown. As we talked about her involvement with game settings like Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Birthright, I began work on an homage to a cover for another, often overlooked setting—Mystara.
The product I chose was the Glantri: Kingdom of Magic boxed set, with a gorgeous cover painting by my friend Jennell Jaquays (who we sadly lost about six months ago). There’s always a certain loss of detail when going from a large oil painting to a single-panel cartoon … but Jennell’s style is so filled with texture and depth that I feel like the differences are between our two pieces feel even greater than in most of the drawings I’ve done for this show.
That’s not to say that I think my homage was unsuccessful. I’m actually rather pleased that at the way I translated Jennell’s watery assault. It feels to me like her version is a promotional still from a live-action film, while mine is a cel from an animated adaptation.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
