The second half of our celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons (not to mention the entire hobby of tabletop roleplaying games) begins with the painting that launched 3rd Edition D&D—Todd Lockwood’s cover for the new game’s introductory boxed set, the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Game.
A lot of work had gone not only into the game rules, but also into the visual style and language of 3E. Todd, together with Sam Woods and art director Dawn Murin, spent as much time developing the look of the new edition as the game designers did crafting the mechanics. And this was the image that led the way.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
