By this point in the project, you’ve probably noticed that in choosing the subjects for my cartoon homages, if there isn’t a stone-cold classic—one that EVERYONE, even folks who’ve never played, associates with D&D (and there are only a handful of images that meet that standard)—I’ve leaned heavily on images (mostly covers) that show the player characters in midst of adventuring. And since I want to feature the characters, that means that mostly they’re facing threats that are about their same size.

But in D&D there are a lot of colossal threats—they’re a key part of the game (even beyond dragons). And besides that, I’m personally a big fan (pun intended) of giant monster movies. So I couldn’t possibly pass up the opportunity to do an homage to Jeff Easley’s cover for The Speaker in Dreams (which, by the way, is a great adventure written by none other than James Wyatt … so you should seek it out if you’re not already familiar with it).

Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
