Process Video: 2003
Here's a process video showing the step-by-step creation of the cartoon homage to "Unapproachable East"—an exclusive benefit for paid subscribers
“Magic! Why’d it have to be magic?!”
That’s what I imagine ALL of the fighters in this image are thinking (especially the poor dude who’s hand is melting). They’ve got a very Robert E. Howard feel about them—adventurers who rely on steel and sinew and spirit.
If this is D&D, though, where are the spellcasters? Who goes out with a party filled with nothing but martial characters?
Well, in this instance, the spellcasters were only seen on the BACK cover of 2003’s Forgotten Realms supplement Unapproachable East. It’s another terrific painting by Matt Wilson (who is better known for his work on Magic: the Gathering … but this is the second time I’ve featured his work in this series—the first being 1998’s A Darkness Gathering).
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
