Process Video: 2004
The step-by-step creation of Stan!'s cartoon homage to Wayne Reynolds's cover for the 2004 D&D Basic Game is revealed in this exclusive reward for paid subscribers.
I’ve been a big fan of Wayne Reynolds’s art since I first saw it in the 3E core books. The single image that stands out the most in my memory is his illustration of a chargin bugbear for the Monster Manual … but I know that when I encountered that I’d already become curious about who the artist was behind the “WAR” signature. But it’s only now with this project that I’ve taken any time to do interpretations of his work … and I must say that I like redrawing his paintings nearly as much as I enjoy looking at them!
The 2004 D&D Basic Game is probably the first cover painting of Wayne’s that I remember … but I’ve seen and adored so many covers by him that it’s difficult to be sure. Doing this cartoon homage was fun from sketch to finishing touches … and I look forward to interpreting more of his work very soon.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
