Process Video: 2017
A step-by-step video of the creation of Stan!'s homage to Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Over the course of this project doing homages to various pieces of classic D&D art, I’ve mostly picked images that focused on adventurers doing adventurous things. That hasn’t ALWAYS been true, of course. There are a couple where the adventurers are just posing, a few where the focus is on a monster rather than the PCs, and even a few that ONLY have a monster. But this is the first time that even the monster isn’t the focus of the piece—just a big of background. The focus in this Jason Rainville painting is the STUFF … the treasure. And it’d be hard to argue that it isn’t just as classically D&D as any of the previous picks.
The funny thing is, the book is called Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, putting the beholder front and center … except in the cover image itself.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
