I’ve done more than sixty of the these cartoon homages at this point, and I think that I can see what my particular Stan!ish style brings to most of them … but somehow it’s the covers painted by the great Jeff Easley that I see a little something more in. Whenever I do an interpretation of one of Jeff’s pieces, I feel there’s a bit of almost Disney-esque liveliness that creeps in there, too. I have a hard time putting my finger on it … though in this tip of the creative cap to the 1984 AD&D Player’s Handbook I see it most clearly in the demonic creatures. To my eye, they feel like they could almost be related to characters from the Gargoyles TV show.

Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
