It was a lot of fun for me to create a cartoon homage to Jeff Easley’s cover painting for The Dawning of a New Age. This was the first novel in the Dragonlance: Fifth Age line, and I was part of the DL5A team at TSR. We got to consult on that novel (my first time with that honor and responsibility), which gave me a thrill of having an infinitesimal slice of the glory when it was published.

And what an incredible cover Jeff provided—the first look at the new, kaiju-sized Dragon Overlords, a first look at some of the characters who would become the heroes of this new age, all wrapped up in a painting by one of the greatest fantasy illustrators of his generation.

I think of all the cartoon homages I’ve done as part of this series, this is the one that I have the closest professional ties to … and that gives it an extra special place in my heart. Having said that … I also think I did a pretty good job.

Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
