Process Video: Dragon Magazine 86
Exclusively for paid subscribers.
Deni Beauvais’s quartet of chess-themed cover paintings are among Dragon Magazine’s most memorable and most beloved (and given how many great covers the magazine had, that’s really saying something). But “Stalemate,” the title of the painting used on issue #86, has always been my favorite of the group.
I learned a lot while creating my cartoon homage to that piece (as I always do). I noticed things never had previously, despite years of staring at the image, and I came to appreciate intricacies of the posture and positioning that you only ever get when doing a drawing yourself.
As always, I brought my own personal style to the homage (that’s the point, really) … but it also got me to try things I never would have on my own, and given me a couple of new tricks I can bring with me to my own original work in the future.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
