The DL series of adventure modules were published simultaneously with the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy—along with fiction published in Dragon Magazine—making Dragonlance arguably the first transmedia property ever. One important piece of that puzzle were the cover paintings created by the TSR art staff.

Larry Elmore is the one most closely associated with Dragonlance, but he certainly wasn’t the only one. Keith Parkinson’s cover painting for DL8 Dragons of War is certainly among the best remembered images, and definitely played a part in helping turn Krynn into one of the most beloved fantasy settings of all time.

Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
