Process Video: Northlands Sagas
Exclusively for paid subscribers
Wintry weather is blanketing most of the U.S. this week … but it’s nothing compared to the weather they get in the Northlands, the norse-inspired section of Kobold Press’ Midgard setting. I began drawing an homage to the cover of the Northlands Sagas adventure collection when I was chatting with game designer Brian Suskind back in Episode 68, and then did further work on it during a Work in Progress episode last month.
I really love Aaron Miller’s cover painting. It does an incredible job of feeling VERY much like a classic D&D product cover, while at the same time definitely giving the vibe of being a unique setting unlike your average, generic third-party product. It reminds me of other snowy masterpieces of fantasy art like Frank Frazetta’s “Snow Giants” or Barry Windsor Smith’s cover for Conan the Barbarian #16.
Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
