For a year-and-a-half or so I’ve been doing cartoon homages as part of this show. All of them have been fantastical, all of them have been heroic, most of them by far have been standard Western fantasy themed, but this is the first time I’ve done one that wandered into the world of pastoral fantasy. Let me say, in many ways it felt like coming home. This is much closer—in temperament and style—to what I usually draw when left to my own recognizance.

First in Episode 63 and then in a recent work-in-progress show, I created this interpretation of Kathleen Jennings's cover for the soon-to-be-released RiverBank TTRPG from Kobold Press. Like the game itself, it owes a lot to a literary heritage that stretches back to Wind in the Willows and the books of Beatrix Potter, and of course owes a tip of the cap to the movies of Disney, Loony Toons, MGM, and many more.

Subscribers to this newsletter got to see this drawing early, whereas the general public are only just getting their first glimpses of it today. But there’s still something left that’s JUST for the paid subscribers—a process video showing the step-by-step creation of this cartoon homage. (If you’re currently a free subscriber, now would be a great time to upgrade.)
