This Week: WiP Wednesday — Dragon Magazine 86
Join Stan! as he develops another cartoon homage
When I had Bart Carroll on a guest back in Episode 66 I asked him if there were any pieces of game art that were particularly important in his gaming career. As a community manager at Wizards of the Coast for so many years, I figured there might be any number of products that he’d been particularly involved in promoting. But when he mentioned that image that first attracted him to D&D, and set up his whole career was Dennis Beauvais’s cover art for Dragon Magazine 86, I KNEW that was the piece I was going to draw.
This was the first of three or four chess-themed cover paintings that Beauvais did for the magazine. All of them are classics, as are so many others he did. I had great fun sketching out my interpretation of that painting and am really looking forward to refining it in this weeks show. I guarantee you this is not the last time I’ll be doing an homage to Beauvais. (My personal favorite is “The Bridge of Sorrows” from Dragon Magazine 92 … and I am FOR SURE going to do a cartoon homage to that one of these days!)
While I work, I’ll be telling stories and answering questions. We’ll be streaming live at 6pm Pacific on Wednesday, November 5 … so join us in the live chat room if you can. But if not, remember that you can always find the replay over on my YouTube channel.
If you’re enjoying the show, please consider sharing it with other folks you think would like it, too. Word of mouth is the BEST way to help the show grow.
And please do consider upgrading your subscription. You’ll get access to process videos for all of the art produced on the show and discounts on all art prints and other show-related merch. Plus you’ll be helping to keep the show going and perhaps even expanding.
